How to Wallpaper Outlet Covers for a Seamless Look

If you’ve ever wallpapered a wall and been totally distracted by a glaring white outlet cover, I’ve got a simple fix you’ll love—DIY wallpaper outlet covers. These custom covers are one of those tiny upgrades that make a huge difference in how polished your space feels. Instead of buying pricey decorative plates, I used leftover wallpaper and some spray adhesive to turn plain outlet covers into seamless, camouflaged details. It’s quick, budget-friendly, and makes your outlets practically disappear into the wall. Here’s exactly how to do it!

What You Need to Make Wallpaper Outlet Covers

That’s literally it. No need to buy new decorative plates or hunt for something custom. Just wrap the covers you already have in the wallpaper you’re using, and boom—custom wallpaper outlet covers that match perfectly.

How to Make Wallpaper Outlet Covers Step by Step

Here’s exactly how I wrapped outlet covers with wallpaper for a polished, custom look.

Step 1: Cut a Piece of Wallpaper

Use your outlet cover as a guide. Lay it on the back side of your wallpaper and cut a piece that’s slightly larger on all sides.

Step 2: Spray the Adhesive

The wallpaper I used in this room was the pre-pasted, water-activated kind. To get it to stick to my outlet covers, I need some glue. Spray the front of the outlet cover with Aleene’s Tacky Spray.

Step 3: Stick the Cover to the Wallpaper

Stick the outlet cover face-down onto the back of the wallpaper, centered on your cut piece. Press to really stick the wallpaper onto the plastic cover.

Step 4: Trim Excess

Trim around the edges of the wallpaper with scissors, leaving about ¼ inch border all around. You don’t want too much, or it will be difficult to fold.

Step 5: Snip the Corners

Snip each corner diagonally to make folding easier and cleaner.

Step 6: Fold and Press

Fold the wallpaper over the edges and press it down firmly onto the back of the cover.

Step 7: Reinstall the Wallpapered Outlet Cover

Use the screw from the wall plate to poke through the wallpaper and create your hole. Then just grab a screwdriver and attach the wallpapered outlet cover back onto the wall.

Step 8: Punch Out the Outlet Holes

Next, plug something in to gently punch through the wallpaper where the outlet openings are. It’s quick, clean, and creates perfectly sized, discreet holes

Before and After: Hiding Outlets with Wallpaper Covers

Just look at the difference. The before photo shows a standard almond-colored outlet that completely interrupts the design. And after? The outlet blends into the wallpaper like it was never there.

Do You Have to Match the Wallpaper Pattern Exactly?

Because my wallpaper is floral and a little forgiving, I didn’t bother lining up the pattern on this project. It still looks amazing. But if I were using something more structured—like the plaid I used in Malcom’s room or maybe stripes—I’d definitely take the time to match things up for that totally seamless look. But with this gorgeous floral wallpaper… go ahead and try to spot the outlet in this picture. It might take you a minute.

Use Wallpaper Outlet Covers Anywhere You Want to Hide an Outlet

When I built custom bunk beds for my girls, I added a recessed niche above each bed for books, lights, and a cozy touch. Both niches have built-in lights and outlets, so I used the same wallpaper outlet cover trick inside. It’s such a small detail, but it makes the outlets disappear and keeps the whole space looking clean and intentional. This space wouldn’t look nearly so good with a bright white outlet cover.

I seriously love wallpaper. It adds so much personality and makes a huge impact in any room. I’ve used it everywhere—from bedrooms and bathrooms to the inside of closets—and it always brings the space to life. FAQ About Wallpaper Outlet Covers

Can you use peel-and-stick wallpaper to cover outlet plates?

Yes! Peel-and-stick wallpaper works great for this project and may even be easier to apply than pasted paper. Just make sure you press the edges down firmly so they don’t lift.

How long do wallpapered outlet covers last?

Mine have held up beautifully with no peeling, especially since I used strong adhesive and wrapped the edges securely.

Should you seal wallpaper on outlet covers for durability?

Not necessarily, but if you’re worried about durability or frequent cleaning, you can lightly spray a clear matte sealer over the wallpapered cover for extra protection.
