Harry Potter Family Costumes for Halloween

Whether you grew up with the books or binged the movies, Harry Potter is a slam-dunk family costume theme. With icons like Harry, Hermione, and Ron—and scene-stealers like Dumbledore, McGonagall, Luna, Hagrid, Bellatrix, and Dobby—everyone can claim a favorite. The best part? Most looks come together with a robe, a wand, and one fun accessory, so outfitting the whole crew is simple and budget-friendly.

Why We Picked a Harry Potter Theme

My husband, Stuart, has been reading the entire Harry Potter series out loud to our kids, and to say we are all hooked would be an understatement. Every night the kids beg for just one more chapter, and the adventures at Hogwarts have become part of our daily conversations. So when Halloween rolled around, choosing Harry Potter as our family costume theme was the easiest decision ever. It felt like we were stepping straight out of the pages we had been reading together.

DIY Dobby Costume for Kids

One of the cutest parts of our Harry Potter family costumes was turning our little one into Dobby the house elf. The outfit was as simple as cutting an off-white pillowcase for the tunic, then adding a bald cap, elf ears, and a magic wand. Quick, easy, and absolutely adorable.

Hermione Granger Costume

Every Harry Potter family costume needs a Hermione, and ours couldn’t have been cuter. The costume was simple to pull together with a Gryffindor robe, a wand, and, of course, a “spellbook” tucked under her arm. Hermione is such an iconic character that she’s instantly recognizable, and this little version of her completely stole the show.

Luna Lovegood Costume

Luna Lovegood is such a fun and quirky character, and she made the perfect addition to our Harry Potter family costumes. With her robe, long blonde wig, oversized Spectrespecs glasses, and a wand, the look came together instantly. Luna’s whimsical personality shines through in this costume, and it added such a playful vibe to our family’s Hogwarts lineup.

Harry Potter and Baby Hedwig Costumes

No Harry Potter family costume would be complete without Harry himself. Stuart had the classic look down with a Gryffindor robe, round glasses, and a wand. Don’t forget the signature lightning bolt scar on his forehead. Simple pieces, but instantly recognizable as the boy who lived.

And for our baby, we couldn’t resist making him Hedwig. This one was so easy — just a cozy zip-up Hedwig hoodie that was soft, comfortable, and adorable all night long. It was the simplest costume of the bunch, and it got so many smiles.

Professor McGonagall Costume

To complete our Harry Potter family costumes, I dressed up as Professor McGonagall. Her costume is such a classic, and it was fun to recreate her look with a long green velvet robe, a tall pointed witch hat, glasses, and a wand. McGonagall is one of the most iconic professors at Hogwarts, and slipping into her character tied our whole family theme together perfectly.
