Every year we go all-in on a DIY family costume – and this time our big crew did a colorful garden theme that’s no-sew, budget-friendly, and kid-proof. As we add more kids, choosing a DIY costume gets more interesting in the best way. This year, our large family went with a garden theme. Every part of our family costume was DIY, no sewing required, super budget-friendly, and easy to pull together at the last minute. Think colorful, comfy, and kid-proof.

The boys made the cutest little garden gnomes. I whipped up the hats and beards quickly with simple materials like craft foam and faux fur, then dressed them in matching brown overalls and long-sleeve tees. This DIY costume was fast, comfy, and perfect for toddlers and babies, but could easily be upscaled to any size. Just saying, a whole family costume of DIY garden gnomes would be adorable!
Perfect for family Halloween costume ideas or themed class parties. For the full step-by-step on the hat and beard, see How to Make a Garden Gnome Costume for Kids.

We started with a big pack of multi-colored cardstock, then let the girls’ imaginations take over when it came to the flower headpieces. They loved helping with every step of these DIY costumes. They chose the colors, designed the petal layers, helped cut everything, and assembled their blooms. We added a basic green outfit for the “stems” and finished with a DIY flower pot skirt.

My husband Stuart’s costume might be the easiest one to wear out of the whole family’s DIY costumes, because it is literally just a basic black t-shirt. I made the “bag of fertilizer” design with craft foam and my trusty hot glue gun. No Cricut or fancy cutter needed. Bonus idea: his fertilizer shirt with my gardener outfit makes a cute couples costume on its own.

My gardener costume is the kind I love because it’s all put together with items you probably already have in your closet. Cute overalls, a neutral shirt, a sun hat, and a small hand trowel were all it took. Simple, comfy, and it ties the whole garden theme together.
