There are a few moments in childhood that just stick forever, and a Disney trip is one of them. If you’re wondering how to surprise kids with a Disney trip, or if it’s even worth setting up a surprise, I’m telling you… the work of executing the surprise is 100% worth it. The anticipation, the excitement, the pure magic of it all. I didn’t want to just tell my kids we were going. I wanted to create a moment they would never forget by using three magical wishes.

A few days before our trip, I ordered a genie lamp.
When it showed up, I casually told the kids that as the owner of the lamp, I now had three wishes. Just planting the seed. No big reveal yet. No excitement. Just letting the idea sit there and simmer.

A few days later, we were all sitting at the breakfast table, and I announced that I had decided on my first wish. They brought me the lamp, I gave it a dramatic little rub, and I said:
“I wish we could all go to Florida.”
Now… in our house, I say this ALL the time. Especially in the middle of freezing Midwest weather. So no one really believed anything was actually happening.
But, a few minutes later, Stuart walked in. And normally, he’s the one shutting down my spontaneous “let’s go to Florida” ideas… But this time?
He announced to us all that he thought it would be a great idea if we all went to Florida for the week.
WHAT?!?! The kids were SHOOK.
And before they could even process it… we were loading up the van, heading to the airport, and boarding a flight to Ft Lauderdale. Our oldest even watched Aladdin on the plane ride, just to brush up on the rules for my three wishes.

At this point, they have no idea that a Disney trip is in the works, no clue that I’ve already packed their princess dress and mouse ears. This is a slow build of a surprise!
After our plane ride we head to our hotel, and while we’re hanging out I casually say:
“Wouldn’t it be amazing if Grandma was here?”
I rub the lamp and make my wish for Grandma to join us on our Florida trip.
My older girls immediately decided this was where they’d prove me wrong. They marched straight to the hotel room door, opened it…
…and Grandma was standing right there.

The SCREAMS. The disbelief. The full “okay wait… is this actually real?” moment.
This is when they fully bought into the magic of the lamp.
Now for the final wish that will surprise our kids with a magical Disney trip! Full disclosure, this did not go how I thought it would.
We piled into the car the next day and drove over near the port. The kids thought we were just out exploring. Then they saw it. The giant Disney cruise ship.
I grabbed the lamp and said I was ready to make my third wish… and immediately, my two oldest began to protest and try to take the lamp away. They did NOT want to go on a cruise.

To be fair, they had just gone on their first cruise a few months earlier, and it wasn’t the best experience. Everyone got sick, and it was a Princess cruise we had gotten on an amazing deal, but it was definitely geared more toward adults than kids.
But I made the wish anyway. And despite the literal tears, we boarded our Disney cruise.

Within hours… total mindset shift. Disney cruises are just built differently for families.
My kids were surprised by just how much there was to do and all of the amazing entertainment on board. Everything from the characters, the fireworks, the waterslides, our amazing servers, the private island, and our gorgeous room… I could go on and on… made it a magical childhood experience!

And most importantly… no one got sick this time.
By the end of the first day, the same kids who were protesting were ALL IN.
I could have just told them we were going. But turning it into a story… into an experience… into something they got to live through in real time?
That’s what made it unforgettable.
The suspense
The disbelief
The “wait… is this actually happening?” moments
It made the trip feel even more magical before we even set foot on the ship. This is something they will remember for their whole lives!
