On our road trip from St. Louis to Utah, we stopped to stay with family overnight, and you know me, I can’t resist a quick project. While we were there, I pulled together a guest room refresh for my sister-in-law: no paint, no wallpaper, no molding. We layered cozy fall bedding, added matching nightstands, and sprinkled in a few decorative touches to warm up the space. It took an afternoon, cost way less than a full makeover, and proved (again) that little switches can have a big impact on how a room feels

For this guest room refresh, I opted for a layered neutrals with pops of deep colors. Think creamy ivory, deep blues, and rich burgundy. The cozy fall bedding makes the room feel calming, not cluttered. Mixing textures (soft sheets, a velvet duvet, and a chunky knit throw) adds depth in seconds.
My fall formula: breathable sheets → cozy duvet for everyday use → large knit blanket for warmth → a textured throw for that pop of color and for chilly nights. It’s the quickest way to make a guest bed feel luxe without overheating or overstyling.
We started with dark blue linen sheets because they’re breathable and still cozy. Then we layered a super cozy velvet comforter in a neutral cream. Don’t forget to fold it back to show off those sheets. My sister-in-law already had a white bed skirt, so we kept it. If you can reuse items you already own, you’ll save money, and it makes a guest room refresh even easier to pull off.

I like to layer a large blanket on top of the comforter instead of under it. It adds color and texture, especially when it’s as gorgeous as this deep blue knit blanket, and guests can grab it or skip it depending on how warm they sleep. A throw at the end of the bed is a must. The burgundy-and-cream throw blanket adds a cozy pop of color to our cozy fall bedding that our guest room refresh really needed.

A thoughtful pillow arrangement makes the whole bed, in my opinion. We keep one sleeping pillow on each side (these pillows are the BEST!), then layer a second set in the shams that match the comforter. Adding printed throw pillows instantly dials up the luxury. Finally, a long lumbar in a subtle pattern and neutral tone ties it all together and finishes our cozy fall bedding palette.

Just because it’s a guest room, doesn’t mean that nightstands are optional. Your guests need a spot to park a phone, glasses, a book, or a glass of water. For this guest room refresh, I kept the styling simple and useful. Matching lamps give soft evening light, a small framed print and candle add warmth on one side, and a little potted plant with a catchall dish on the other keeps things tidy.

I loved these modern-style nightstands. The open shelf leaves room for a basket or extra linens later, and the wood tone ties in beautifully with our cozy fall bedding palette.
By the time the bed was layered with cozy fall bedding, it just needed those small comforts that make a space feel lived in. Warm bulbs in a bedside lamp soften the corners, and a welcoming candle or diffuser sets a subtle mood with scent. Little finishes like these are the difference between a quick tidy and a true guest room refresh.
Here are easy extras that help guests feel at home:
Tiny touches can equal a big welcome.
It’s crazy the difference an afternoon and a few special touches made in this guest room. Swapping bedding, adding cozy fall bedding layers, and bringing in nightstands transformed the room in an afternoon. No paint required.

With five kids, we didn’t have a spare room to dedicate to guests. A horizontal Murphy bed was the perfect solution. It gives us a real, comfortable bed when family visits, then folds away so the basement can go back to everyday life.
